WHAT WE LOVE...

The opening of Hotel Indigo Bath in autumn 2020 has been the biggest news on the accommodation front in the city for years. Spread along an elegant Grade I-listed Georgian terrace, the 166-room property merges two former hotels on the site. Tongue-in-cheek visual twists on all things Georgian set the fun tone - even though Indigo is part of the global InterContinental Hotels Group, this hotel is individually designed and doesn't feel part of a chain. Other winning elements include: the location, right in the city centre but quiet; the restaurant, Elder, which has quickly become one of the top places for a special meal in Bath; and the big drinks terrace on the wide pavement in front of the hotel.

THE DETAILS

THE LOCATION

Situated on South Parade, and nestled within an elegant terrace constructed in the 1740s by John Wood the Elder, a prominent Georgian architect in Bath. The Roman Baths, the city's most popular tourist destination and Bath Spa train station are both just a five-minute stroll away.

The street is a cul-de-sac, so even though you're right in the centre of the city with the key sights and shopping streets a short walk away, it's very peaceful.

By car: Hotel Indigo is 2 hours 40 mins from London, 2 hours from Birmingham and 3 hours 20 mins from Sheffield.

By train: London Paddington to Bath Spa takes 1 hour 20 mins. The hotel is a 5-minute walk from the station. Book trains to Bath Spa.

CHARACTER & STYLE

Think Georgian infused with playful touches and you'll get a sense of the style, public spaces are adorned with contemporary chandeliers, historical city maps and paint-splattered Regency-style portraits add a visually striking element. While this design is captivating, it might not entirely align with the tastes of traditionalists.

THE FACILITIES

It may come as a surprise that a recently opened high-end hotel lacks a spa; however, the Thermae Bath Spa, a mere five-minute walk from the hotel, provides a wonderful alternative. Staff are exceptionally friendly and attentive.

FOOD & DRINK

Drinks can be sipped in a clubby bar or on the terrace. The Elder occupies intimate, masculine dining rooms adorned with hunting-themed décor. Led by head chef Gavin Edney, the restaurant excels in contemporary British cuisine, particularly emphasizing game. Our delightful wild damson soufflé, crowned with shortbread and served with bay leaf ice cream, was truly exceptional.

The Elder: farm-to-fork and nose-to-tail fine dining, British cuisine, game, seafood, sustainable, seasonal and locally-sourced produce. Vegan and vegetarian menus. Open Weds-Sun for lunch and dinner. Set lunch from £27.50, two-course dinner for £37.50, three courses for £45.
