The Atlantic Hotel, St Brelade, Jersey
Occupying one of the most dramatic locations of any hotel on the island, the Atlantic sits high on a headland overlooking the sweep of St Ouen's Bay in its own extensive grounds. Architecturally of the 1970s, with a white, boxy exterior, the inside has the feel of an elegant villa with exposed granite walls, sculptures and artworks. The pool terrace is a tranquil place to sit in summer and listen to the birds in the surrounding trees, or you can borrow some racquets for a game of tennis. There's also an indoor pool and gym for exercise on wet days. The modern British menu in the bright, light Ocean restaurant is packed with comforting flavoursome food and a Coravin system means plenty of wine by the glass.
Sit on a bench in the grounds and you can watch paragliders drift down to the beach below.
The hotel sits on the headland with sweeping views across St Ouen's bay. There is a golf course next to the hotel and shops a 5-minute drive away.
By plane: flights from London Heathrow to Jersey take around one hour. The hotel is a 10-minute taxi ride from the airport.
By boat: ferries to St Helier run from Poole (4 hours) and Portsmouth (10 hours 20 minutes). condorferries.co.uk
