Grosvenor Pulford Hotel & Spa, Pulford, Cheshire
Sitting right on the border between England and Wales, the Grosvenor Pulford is part of Nelson Hotels, a small family-owned group that also runs three popular Cheshire gastropubs. On the outside, all looks very traditional but step inside reception and things get altogether more unexpected - there's a glam feel to the public spaces, an Art Deco vibe in the main restaurant and the spa facilities include a lovely Asian-inspired sensory garden filled with water features. That spa is one of the hotel's main attractions but even if you're not here for full-on pampering there are other ways to relax at the end of a day's sightseeing, with a good-sized pool, attractive lawned areas and the choice of two restaurants.
If you fancy a seaside jaunt it's only around 40 minutes from here to the Wirral coast or an hour to the Victorian resort of Llandudno.
The hotel is nestled between Chester and Wrexham, with a bus service to each.
By car: the hotel is 4 hours 30 mins drive from London and 1 hour from Manchester. There is free parking on-site.
By train: Crewe Station has direct links to London and is a 50-minute taxi ride away. Chester station is 15 minutes' drive away. thetrainline.com
