WHAT WE LOVE...

AMANO Group likes to provide travellers with reasonably priced rooms that feel a cut above. The formula works - the brand has hotels and apartments at eight locations in Berlin, and another in London's Covent Garden. Hotel AMO is one of its smaller properties, set amid the energetic, graffiti-splattered streets of Mitte and billed - correctly - as a 'cosy yet stylish retreat'. While the rooms may be compact, they have a polished feel enhanced by a bright, no nonsense bathroom. The JOSEPH restaurant offers colourful eastern Mediterranean cuisine to a backing track of Israeli pop. Most guests stay two or three nights and include many business travellers.

THE DETAILS

Location

Friday nights are when Berliners come out to play and the surrounding bars and restaurants are packed with people enjoying themselves.

A central location means the bustling Friedrichstrasse is right on your doorstep. The main shopping district is where you can also find the iconic Checkpoint Charlie.
By plane: direct flights to Berlin Brandenburg from London (1 hour 40 minutes), Manchester (1 hour 55 minutes) and Edinburgh (2 hours 5 minutes). It's a 45-minute drive to the hotel. skyscanner.net

Style & Character

This hotel suits price-conscious travellers who want to be at the centre of things. Sixty per cent of guests are here on business. This is a 'what it says on the tin' hotel - if the rate works for you, you can expect an attractive room, conscientious staff and an engaging neighbourhood.

Service & Facilities

Guests need their room key to operate the lifts, creating a sense of security in an area that has its wild moments.

  • Restaurant
  • Bar
  • Terrace
  • Free Wi-Fi

Rooms

Rooms on the fifth floor have an angled roof and Velux windows, creating an attic cosiness. At night you can lie in bed and hear the trams passing - most lines are in the east of the city.

Economy Room, Standard Room, Comfort Room, Superior Room
Facilities include: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, hairdryer, smart TV, free Wi-Fi

Food & Drink

In summer, the restaurant expands into the hotel courtyard which has a bar, trailing plants and decorative stonework. We recommend the perfectly made 'Tommy's Margarita' followed by a plate of fish and chips Tel Aviv-style. Then another margarita, because Berlin's like that.

Joseph Restaurant: casual restaurant, Israeli cuisine. Open daily, from 6pm. Mains from €16.50.
