With bags of character and well turned out rooms, this is the perfect place to stay if you've come to enjoy the country walks and outdoor activities that this pretty part of England offers. The menu makes full use of the rich pickings from the area: trout from the chalk streams, game, small-production cheeses and watercress from Alresford, which is a 10-minute drive away. Dogs are warmly welcomed and gun-lockers are provided in each of the seven rooms if you've come to shoot in season. Rooms are country-chic and you can see the 19th-century flint and brick construction on the bare walls, which is offset with deep blue or grey paint.

The Woolpack is in the tiny hamlet of Totford, in the heart of the Candover valley. Take the footpath directly out of the pub and you can walk to Alresford in an hour and a half through varied countryside.

The inn is a half hour's drive from the New Forest National Park, and 20 minutes from Winchester on the edge of the South Downs.
By car: The hotel is 2 hours from London, 1 hour 40 mins from Bristol and 50 mins from Portsmouth. There is free parking on-site.
By train: London Waterloo to Basingstoke takes 45 mins. The station is a 20-minute taxi ride from the hotel.
