WHAT WE LOVE...

As you approach this impressive Relais & Chateaux eco-hotel, the first thing you notice is that it is draped with plants - an attractive mix of vine, wisteria and bougainvillea. Vegetarians and vegans will especially love this hotel, with its seriously good rooftop restaurant focusing on their needs. There's some impressive antique furniture and even more impressive artworks, by the likes of Picasso and Miró. There's a gym, small library and business centre, and the guest rooms are opulent, furnished in either a contemporary or traditional style - there's something for everyone!

THE DETAILS

Location

We loved the antique and traditional shops near the hotel - there's a lovely old bookshop directly opposite the entrance.

The hotel is near Piazza Navona; cross the River Tiber to vist Castel Sant'Angelo and Vatican City.
By plane: direct flights to Rome Leonardo da Vinci from London (2 hours 25 minutes) or Manchester (2 hours 40 minutes). The hotel is a 35-minute drive from the airport. Paid parking nearby. skyscanner.net

The best rooms were reworked by Richard Meier and feature neat, clean lines, blond wood and other attractive design features. We loved the variety of décors available, from snazzy white marble bathrooms to traditionally-furnished rooms with antiques.

Food & Drink

The organic, vegetarian and vegan Mater Terrae Restaurant is on the roof terrace with great views. We recommend the artichoke heart stuffed with cashew cheese, herbs and vegetables, with broccoli purée and truffled potatoes.

Mater Terrae: gourmet restaurant and bistro bar, vegetarian and vegan cuisine. Mains include aubergine parmigiana and Italian potato rosti. All-day dining, open daily. Tasting menu from €95.
