WHAT WE LOVE...

A small and quirky country house hotel on the fellside close to Grasmere, Lancrigg is perhaps best known for both its bright lemon-yellow colour and lush gardens. The views are pretty spectacular, too. Restored to something of its Victorian and Edwardian hey-day - plasterwork ceilings, shuttered windows - but with a modern touch, it has the feel of a family home. Indeed, it's very family-friendly with a children's play area in the garden. Bedrooms have a simple country feel while, throughout, vintage pieces are mixed with contemporary. There's a casual-eating evening menu, and the option for drinks on the terrace. Several walks start direct from the hotel or it's a 15-minute stroll into Grasmere.

THE DETAILS

Location

The hotel sits on the main path that leads up Helm Crag, a short easy-ish climb with stupendous all-round views from the summit.

Wordsworth's Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount are nearby, while Grasmere, with its famous gingerbread shops, is a 15-minute walk away.
By car: 2 hours from Manchester, 3 hours from Edinburgh and 5 hours 20 minutes from London. There is free parking on-site.
By train: trains run from Manchester Piccadilly (just over 1 hour), London Euston (3 hours) and Edinburgh (2 hours) to Oxenholme Lake District station. The hotel is a 45-minute taxi ride from the station. thetrainline.com

Style & Character

Lancrigg is perfect for people those who enjoy walking, who want country house surrounds - especially with gardens - but without fuss and formality. The easy-going atmosphere and the interesting mix of vintage and mid-century furniture, together with lots of ferns, is relaxing.

Service & Facilities

Getting good advice on local walks - and the best viewpoints - saves having to plan your own routes. Dogs are made very welcome, with dog-bed and bowls if necessary, and are allowed in five of the bedrooms, together with most of the rest of the hotel and grounds.

Rooms

We love Whittington, a low-beamed room, cosily tucked away from the others, while Silver Howe probably has the best views over the valley and fells. The locally made Bath House products are probablyour favourite treats to find in a bathroom.

Azalea, Easdale, Whittington, Dickens, Wordsworth, Nightingale, Darwin, Silver Howe, Wainwright
Facilities include: ensuite bathroom, Bath House toiletries, free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee-making facilities

Food & Drink

You can't beat warming up with a classic Hot Toddy in front of the fire on an autumnal or wintry day. We love recovering at one of the outside tables with a big pot of tea and slice of homemade carrot cake after a day's walking.

Poet's Cafe Bar: relaxed, pub food, local produce. Open 12-4pm and 5:30-8pm Friday to Monday. Dinner mains from £16.95
