Not many hotels tell a story quite like Hotel THe Volcán Lanzarote's. You enter this five-star resort through a copy of a church. And not any old church. But the original island capital Teguise's Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, a three-naved church with a distinctive tower. Piped Gregorian chants add extra drama to the arrival. Elsewhere, a miniaturised version of La Geria's volcanic vineyards houses a solarium, and there's even a mock volcano overlooking the hotel to reinforce the theme. Besides that, the rest of the hotel is made up like a classic Canarian village, with the whitewashed exteriors loved by Lanzarote icon, artist/architect César Manrique.

Being near the marina makes staying here feel like you are mingling with the jet set. For more 21st century design than the hotel, the sophisticated Marina Rubicón shopping centre is a short walk away.

This well-placed hotel is strolling distance from Playa Blanca. Quiet, unspoilt beaches are a short drive away at Papagayo.
By plane: flights from London, Birmingham and Manchester to Lanzarote take around 4 hours 30 mins. The hotel is a 30-minute drive from Lanzarote airport. Free parking available.

The hotel suits both families and couples - who are able to retreat to the more sedate adults-only Club Volcán section. We love taking afternoon tea in green and pleasant Club Volcán - a nostalgic treat for lovers of this great British tradition.
