Fox & Anchor, Farringdon, London
On the edge of Smithfield Market, which has been a meat market for hundreds of years, the Fox and Anchor is a Grade II-listed inn and a great and less obvious choice for accommodation in central London. Whilst it retains the feel of a traditional pub, the six individually-designed elegant boutique bedrooms and suite upstairs ooze contemporary décor without forgetting the building's historic roots. Its City location means it's noticeably quieter at weekends due to the largely non-residential neighbourhood, and it is just a five-minute walk to Barbican and Farringdon tube stations. Hearty breakfasts and wholesome lunches and dinners can be enjoyed in the lovely Dickensian-style bar.
It's great to be in the heart of London staying in accommodation that mixes contemporary with traditional so well.
The hotel is in trendy Islington, minutes away from the Barbican, Museum of London and St. Paul's Cathedral.
By car: the hotel is 4 hours from Manchester and under 3 hours from Bristol.
By train: Farringdon station is 3 minutes' walk away. Liverpool Street station is a 15-minute taxi ride. thetrainline.com
