South Place Hotel, City of London
The only hotel in the mainly restaurant-focused D&D Group - and the only one to be built in the City of London in the last century - South Place can't help but be a business hotel given its location. But it has some fun twists that make it unique - a couple of excellent restaurants and popular bars, funky art and perhaps the most dog-friendly policy in the Square Mile. Because the hotel was purpose-built, the rooms are all very similar, differing only in size, but they are all very spacious by London standards. The hotel's location just off Moorgate naturally means it's a top choice for City and corporate folk, but really this is a good place to stay whoever you are and whatever your reason for visiting London.
You are close to the Barbican arts centre in one direction and to the hip and happening bars and restaurants of Shoreditch and Hoxton in the other.
The hotel is in the heart of London's financial district, a couple of minutes' from Moorgate tube station.
By car: the hotel is 4 hours from Manchester, 2 hours 30 mins from Birmingham and 7 hours from Glasgow.
By train: Liverpool Street station is 5 minutes' walk away and Kings Cross station is a 15-minute taxi ride away. thetrainline.com
Style & Character
Ideal for business-folk looking for somewhere convenient yet stylish and outside the mainstream that serves good food. The hotel has a revolving artist in residence whose work decorates the lobby and other public area and is usually interesting and always for sale.
Service & Facilities
The hotel has its own fleet of yellow bikes for guests' use if you fancy getting around on two wheels. All of the hotel's rooms are dog-friendly, and they don't just tolerate dogs and their owners, but lay on beds, towels and treats as well as providing a guide to the best dog walks nearby.
- Free Wi-Fi
The Studio rooms on each corner of the building are spacious and light - really the size of a small suite. We love that every room has a toaster, ensuring that your room-service breakfast toast is always piping hot!
