Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht, Netherlands
Housed in a former 1970s library, a building echoing the classic canal house style with a modern perspective, this hotel represents a celebration of Dutch designer Marcel Wanders' very distinct vision. With chequerboard tables, reinvented Delft pottery and Amsterdam-referenced wallpapers, you feel you're almost in a Dutch Alice in Wonderland; it's exhilarating for many but not everyone's cup of tea. Perfectly located centrally within the historic canal district on one of Amsterdam's prettiest canals, the major sights, boutique shopping and a good choice of restaurants and bars are all nearby. The hotel has a cosy cocktail bar, a restaurant serving seasonal, locally sourced dishes, a tranquil spa, well-equipped fitness centre and striking artworks and interior design at every turn.
There's a lovely view from the lobby/bar and some rooms of one of the nicest, most historic canals in Amsterdam.
Walk along the Prinsengracht Canal and you'll find the Nine Streets shopping area, Houseboat Museum and several art galleries. Museum quarter is a 15-minute walk away.
By plane: direct flights from London and Manchester take around 1 hour 15 minutes. The hotel is a 25-minute drive from Schiphol airport and a 15-minute drive from central station. Parking costs €65 per day. skyscanner.net
