WHAT WE LOVE...

It's easy to walk past this hip, designer-led hotel with its unassuming exterior, made up from five historic townhouses on one of Amsterdam's most attractive canals. Step through the door of this supremely central hotel though, and you enter a large, buzzing, trendy, welcoming lounge bar and restaurant area, full of artistic types and ideal for an expertly-made cocktail or healthy food option. Modern, easy-going décor is livened up with retro and vintage pieces, from 1950s easy chairs to analogue clocks, a style that continues to the comfy guest rooms. Lots of boutique shops, restaurants and bars are nearby, along with numerous major sights.

THE DETAILS

Location

We love the hotel's location - it's on Amsterdam's inner canal ring on the gorgeous Herengracht canal.

The hotel is centrally located with sites including Dam Square and the Rijksmuseum no more than 20 minutes away.
By plane: flights to Amsterdam from London and Manchester take around 1 hour 15 mins. The hotel is a 30-minute drive from Schiphol airport and an eight-minute drive from the central station. skyscanner.net.

Style & Character

There's mainly a youngish, artistic, hip crowd here, both business guests and tourists. The pleasing décor, buzzy atmosphere and chilled music effortlessly make you want to linger a while.

Service & Facilities

We love having a beer in the lounge bar, listening to live jazz on a Sunday afternoon: you'll feel like there aren't many better places to be in Amsterdam at that moment.

Rooms

The rooms are pretty uniform in décor, but you might prefer to trade a bit more noise for a canal view, rather than picking the slightly quieter ones looking onto a courtyard. We love how the mix of old and new - vintage pieces mixed with contemporary flashes - is done so well.

Cosy Room, Roomy Room, Biggy Room, Shoebox Single, Shoebox Twin
Facilities include: ensuite bathroom, tea and coffee facilities, hairdryer, TV, free Wi-Fi

Food & Drink

For such a hip, upmarket venue, food is surprisingly good value. For example, tzadziki with olives and a sundried tomato with dough bread is the price of a supermarket pot of tzadziki. Our favourite dish is the slow-cooked duck breast with blackberry jus, cooked in a wood oven with lots of flavour.

Lotti's: brasserie-style dining. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Mains from €17.
