With breathtaking views of both the Simonside and Cheviot Hills in north Northumberland, this farmhouse bed and breakfast will soothe any stressed-out souls. The traditional stone farmhouse, a couple of miles outside Rothbury and on a working sheep farm, belongs to Ann and John Foggin; both of farming families, with the b&b side amiably and efficiently run by Ann. The spacious bedrooms - some in the farmhouse, some in a barn conversion - are luxuriously furnished with top quality fabrics and feature wallpapers in the country house style. Two guest sitting rooms, plus a courtyard garden, give plenty of space for everyone. Ann's cooked-to-order breakfasts are deservedly award winning, and may make it tricky to leave the table and get out for the day.

Being able to walk straight out of the door and up onto the Simonside Hills is fantastic. Plus, with no light pollution, the night skies are terrific - one can often see the Milky Way.

The Arts-and-Crafts, National Trust property Cragside House is a 10-minute drive away.
By car: around 1 hour 15 minutes from Sunderland, 2 hours 30 minutes from Edinburgh and 4 hours from Manchester. Free parking available.
By train: direct train to Alnmouth from Newcastle (25 minutes), Edinburgh (1 hour) and London Kings Cross (3 hours 40 minutes). The hotel is a 40-minute drive from the station.
