The Yeatman, Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal
Perched high above the River Douro, and looking across to the charming city of Porto proper, The Yeatman occupies an enviable position in what is essentially a separate town. Owned by the Fladgate Partnership, which also own several port labels - including Croft and Taylor's - the hotel is in Vila Nova, where port was once stored in handsome, red-roofed, white-walled warehouses after being produced in the Douro Valley. So the hotel pool is decanter-shaped, the cellar stores around 30,000 bottles, and wine is even used in some of the Caudalie spa treatments. Sliced into a hillside, the 70 rooms (and 12 suites) are spread over six levels, all with an incredible view. The main restaurant is Michelin-starred, and each room is named after a different wine label. Gourmets will be happily at home here.
The views across the river are simply stunning; you can while away the hours watching boats drift lazily up and down the Douro.
The hotel is across the bridge in Vila Nova de Gaia, beside the lively waterfront, with views back over to Porto.
By plane: flights to Porto take around 2 hours 25 mins from London. The drive to the hotel takes 30 minutes. On-site parking costs €20 per day. skyscanner.com
