WHAT WE LOVE...
The only thing the Victorians loved more than building railways was building railway hotels to match, and this Gothic flight of elephantine fancy was the go-to hotel in Glasgow for decades with a who's who of famous guests. With a location that's central in more than just name, it's been rescued from decline with its best features lovingly preserved. Although no longer the last word in swish (no spa, swimming pool or fine dining) there's no shortage of swagger, although bedrooms are quietly smart in soothing, restful colours. With a popular, colourfully stylish champagne bar that makes any drink a celebration, and a concourse view that will make you come over all 'Brief Encounter', this is a hotel to remember.

Location
You can't beat climbing off the train and crossing the concourse to the hotel's entrance - seldom has arrival been easier or felt more exclusive.
Locations don't get more central than this; within five minutes' walk, you'll be at Princes Square shopping centre and the Gallery of Modern Art.

Style & Character
Style mavens and Instagrammers may like to know that Champagne Central is one of the places to be seen in the city centre. We loved the 'Wall of Fame' paintings by local artists of some of the many famous guests of the past - think John F Kennedy and Billy Connolly cheek by jowl.
Service & Facilities
Being able to walk straight from reception onto the concourse of Central Station (or the other way around) was advantageous.

Singles will rejoice in proper single rooms (at single room prices) with the same furnishings and amenities of a double. Rooms have a marshmallow-like mattress topper that turned the bed into a cloud and wonderfully vigorous showers.

Food & Drink
Indulge in a champagne afternoon tea followed by a Glasgow to Paris cocktail. The warm treacle and stout sponge with caramel sauce and a Matterhorn of clotted cream was capable of soaking up any number of cocktails.
Champagne Central Lounge: small plates and sharing boards. Dishes include Korean chicken skewers, Black pudding and haggis bonbons, and smoked salmon tartare. Open daily from 10am. Afternoon tea served 12-4pm.
The Restaurant: buffet and à la carte breakfast served daily from 7am.
