WHAT WE LOVE...

This fanciful white Victorian hunting lodge on the edge of a long sea loch, ten minutes from the island capital of Portree, is an easy drive from the most popular sights whether you're walking, climbing, photographing or just admiring the heart-lifting scenery. Although the country house pedigree surrenders to hotel designer décor, happily the remaining honey-coloured carved pine panelling and generous staircase recall a more graceful past. Warm up with a whisky by the fire after a day in waders, fly-fishing on the tumbling River Snizort. Or swap tall tales of big catches in the snug bar before dinner in the conservatory dining room, a perfect vantage point for long summer sunsets before a peaceful night's sleep.

THE DETAILS

Location

A stroll up-river takes you to St Columba's Isle - the burial ground of early bishops and clan chiefs dating from the 10th century.

It's a 10-minute drive to Portree. Visit the Lump, which overlooks the harbour and offers stunning views of the loch.
By car: around 5 hours 15 minutes from both Glasgow and Edinburgh, and 8 hours 30 minutes from Manchester. Free parking on-site.
By train: trains run from Glasgow to Mallaig for the ferry to Skye, and from Inverness to Kyle, where you can take a bus to the island. thetrainline.com
