WHAT WE LOVE...

Harington's is an enjoyably quirky little hotel. It takes its name from Sir John Harington - a godson of Queen Elizabeth I - who owned the land where the hotel stands and is famed for inventing the first flushing toilet! The three interconnected Georgian buildings have lots of natural character, and the 13 cosy and well-equipped bedrooms and public areas are decorated with idiosyncratic flourishes. For example, a wall in one of the bedrooms is covered with a bold feature wallpaper featuring birds, butterflies and flowers. Other selling points include a hot tub on a patio courtyard (bookable for private use), excellent breakfasts, a well-stocked, help-yourself bar and the superb location, on a picturesque cobbled street right in the centre of Bath.

THE DETAILS

A few years ago the BBC filmed scenes for an episode of Sherlock in Queen Street - the lounge in Harington's was used as the green room.

The hotel is a short walk from the Robert Adam-designed Pulteney Bridge and the heart of the city.

By train: Bath Spa station is just 10 minutes away by foot, serviced by Great Western Railway with links to Gloucester (1 hour 20 minutes), Bristol Temple Meads (11 minutes) and London Paddington (1 hour 20 minutes). thetrainline.com

Style & Character

Harington's great for those who want a characterful base right in the thick of things in Bath, with bars, restaurants and shops on the doorstep. We love watching the world go by through the windows on to Queen Street in the lounge and from the best-placed tables in the breakfast room.

Service & Facilities

Harington's has an electric vehicle charging point and parking space at the rear of the property, and further allocated spaces in a nearby public car park (charges apply). Well-behaved dogs are very welcome (£15 per dog per night), and may be treated to a sausage at breakfast.

Rooms

We love the amenities - including good digital radios, Nespresso coffee machines, toiletries from a Bath-based company, and in winter hot water bottles. Our favourite room is Number 6 - a snug space, up in the eaves, with hummingbirds on its feature wallpaper and a good-sized bathroom.

Standard/ Superior/ Feature Double Rooms, Large Superior Double/ Twin/ Triple, Feature Queen Double rooms
Facilities include: ensuite bathroom with shower or bath, TV, DAB radio, free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee-making facilities

Food & Drink

As well as breakfast, Harington's has a well-stocked bar (you help yourself) and an all-day light bites menu (soups, sandwiches, scones, cakes etc). The Veggie Breakfast - a non-meat sausage, hash browns, mushrooms, tomato and eggs however you want them - is very popular.

Harry's Kitchen: currently serving breakfast only, continental or cooked options. Open daily.
