Cross Lane House dates back to 1545 and is a small but stylish boutique hotel near the sea in the Exmoor National Park. The house sits in a hamlet on a National Trust estate and has many delightful period features. It offers great cocktails and good food to anyone who wishes to spend a serene few days communing with nature on Exmoor's wild moors and storm beaches. There are three quiet and comfortable bedrooms plus a restaurant that offers an interesting menu and hearty, nuanced dishes.



We love pottering around nearby Porlock Weir, with its peaceful harbour, shingle ridge, thatched cottages and sheds turned into artist studios.

By car: around 2 hours from Bristol, 4 hours from London and 5 hours 30 minutes from York. There is free parking on site.
By train: trains run to Taunton from Bristol Temple Meads (30 minutes) and London Paddington (1 hour 40 minutes). From Taunton station the hotel is a 50-minute drive.

The hotel suits walkers, thanks to its Exmoor location, and anyone seeking tranquility, good food and a friendly welcome close to the sea. We love the house's original features and that it, and nearby cottages, have been preserved - giving these hamlets a very quaint feel.

We love the efforts made towards sustainability, with glass used for drinking water and toiletries, food miles counted and throws made from recycled material. Pluck, the largest room, has a king-size bed and a lounge area, wood panels and a gentle, vintage rose colour scheme.

Food & Drink

At the bar you can sit by the log-burner on velvet armchairs and choose from a number of imaginative and generously mixed cocktails. In the restaurant, the sea bass is lightly crisped and perfectly cooked, on a bed of seafood tagliatelle, in a delectable, creamy tomato-chilli sauce.

Restaurant: relaxed, refined British pub food, local, seasonal produce. Open for dinner Thursday-Saturday and Sunday lunch. Mains from £13.50.
Bar: cosy, selection of locally produced spirits. Open Thursday-Saturday 5-9pm, Sunday 12-3pm.
Afternoon tea: Friday and Saturday 12-3pm. £25pp.
