Part of the Catalonia hotel chain, the 84-room Portal de l'Angel is a three-star hotel with at least four-star credentials in places. Housed in an elegant and sympathetically-restored townhouse with a handsome neoclassical façade and dating from 1876, it has some grand features, including a marble staircase running around a stunning atrium and a courtyard garden with palms and a pool, which is a rarity in the Gothic Quarter. The rooms are straightforwardly-designed, but of very good quality and some have terraces or balconies. It boast a fabulous central location, a stone's thrown from transport hub Plaça de Catalunya and numerous key sights and shopping areas, as well as a host of restaurants and bars.

This hotel is perfectly located for exploring both the main sights and, with the great transport options, the extremes of the city too.

The hotel is between Plaça de Catalunya and Barcelona's Gothic Quater and is a five minute walk from Catalunya Metro and Railway station.
By plane: Fly to El Prat from London (2 hours 5 mins), Manchester (2 hours 20 mins) and Edinburgh (2 hours 40 mins). The hotel is a 30-minute drive from the airport.

We loved the rooms with a terrace or balcony - the former overlook the courtyard/terrace while the latter overlook the street. The high quality of rooms considering the price is excellent, very pleasant but not fussy.
