URSO is an upmarket boutique hotel with a restaurant loved by locals in an area that is known for its trendy independent boutiques and lively bars, about a 20-minute walk from the main touristy area around Puerto de Sol. Enjoy a quiet cocktail in the lounge while flicking through a range of international publications and enjoying the seductive sounds of a live pianist. Then tuck into traditional Spanish food accompanied by regional wines in the restaurant Casa Felisa. A subterranean spa includes a raised swimming pool, sauna and steam room and a range of beauty and body treatments, while the bedrooms are light and airy with minibars and coffee machines. Top-floor suites have terraces with views over the neighbourhood.

The Barceló market across the road is a lively local market selling fruit and vegetables, fish, cheeses and meat and is a great place to brush shoulders with Madrileños.

Both Plaza de España and the shops at Gran Vía are a 20-minute walk away.
By plane: direct flights to Madrid from London (2 hours 20 minutes), Manchester (2 hours 40 minutes) and Edinburgh (2 hours 45 minutes). The hotel is a 25-minute drive from the airport. Parking costs €33 per day.
