WHAT WE LOVE...

This was Downtown Manhattan's first luxury boutique hotel and remains ever-popular with both trendsetters and celebrities alike. Brandishing an industrial-chic vibe, it mixes materials like hardwood, concrete and metal with soft, colourful fabrics. There's a diverse set of eateries and drinking establishments, including late-night club with live music. It's not the sort of place to have a spa or pool, although there's a 24-hour fitness centre and other amenities include free use of bikes and an especially knowledgeable concierge service. Guest rooms enjoy city views and its great location is at the centre of a buzzing nightlife scene, with a host of subway lines nearby to whisk you further afield.

Business people, models, musicians and other creatives and especially style-conscious younger couples love this hotel. We really like the grand but homely lobby bar area with its mishmash of sofas in leather or coloured fabrics.

The dining and drinking options in the hotel are gloriously different. If you close your eyes you could be in Mexico when eating the Huevos Rancheros with tortilla, black beans, sunny eggs, queso fresco, salsa ranchera and crushed avocado at the Soho Diner.

Grand Bar & Salon: all-day American dining. Open daily 8am until late. Dishes from $18.
SoHo Diner: modern American fare. Open daily 8am until late. Mains from $21.
