A Georgian building in central Chichester has been sensitively restored to create this boutique hotel with a quality finish and a marriage of old and new decor. You'll find European antiques, some intricately carved, in the bedrooms as well as ensuite bathrooms that are bang up-to-date. East Walls has a lovely location - a short stroll from the town centre attractions, but in a quiet street overlooking a park from its upper rooms. It's best suited to romantic getaways or as a base for cultural breaks. There's a small bar for pre-theatre drinks and you can also relax over tea in the secluded garden. Leave room for pancakes at breakfast.

Visit Chichester Cathedral to see the hand-holding figures on the 'Arundel Tomb' of Philip Larkin's poem, reminding us '…what will survive of us is love'.

The hotel is near Chichester's Roman ruins as well as its quirky art galleries and shops.
By car: Chichester is around two hours' drive from London, just over one hour from Brighton and three hours from Birmingham. There is public parking nearby.
By train: Trains run from London Bridge, Victoria and Waterloo to Chichester, taking around 1 hour 30 mins. Trains from Brighton take 1 hour and from Portsmouth takes around 30 mins. The hotel is a five-minute taxi ride or 15-minute walk from Chichester station.

It's well-placed for culture vultures and as a romantic bolthole, particularly if you opt for the honeymoon suite with four-poster bed. We love the nautical carvings on the French four poster-bed and wardrobe.
