Bowood Hotel Spa & Golf Resort, Chippenham, Wiltshire
Standing in the picturesque grounds of Georgian Bowood House, Bowood Hotel is a purpose-built complex with a spa and golf course. The hotel was built around a decade ago, so does not have period appeal but guests have complimentary access to the historic house and its Capability Brown-designed parkland, with a lake, terraced rose gardens and adventure playground. The latter attracts families and can keep them entertained for hours. Adult guests will come for the PGA golf course, the woodland rhododendron trail or the spa treatments. However, there is much more to see and do here, the grounds are beautiful and Lacock - a National Trust-owned village - is a short drive away.
There's a variety of country walks nearby and also on the estate itself. Marlborough is half-an-hour's drive and has fine antique shops.
If you can prise yourself from the resort's facilities and grounds, you're perfectly placed to explore the North Wessex Downs and Cotswolds.
By car: around 45 minutes from Bristol, 2 hours from London and 3 hours 30 minutes from Manchester. Free parking on-site.
By train: London Paddington to Melksham (via Swindon or Westbury) takes around 1 hour 45 minutes. It's a 15-minute taxi ride to the hotel. thetrainline.com
