WHAT WE LOVE...

This well-established hotel, with its unrivalled position opposite the famous west end of the Minster, is a firm favourite with British and international guests. A collection of townhouses, it has a gentle British charm from its light, classical bedrooms - spread over a warren of corridors and staircases - to its traditional but well-priced menus. The low-key, contemporary styling of the ground floor - dark-wood floors, feature walls - make the most of its small bar and sitting area while the dining room capitalises on its Minster views. Although there are few facilities, the hotel scores highly for the warmth and friendliness of the staff, who are experts on all things York.

Style & Character

Anyone who wants to be in the historic heart of York will enjoy staying here, and who isn't bothered about designer looks or a period feel. The quirky staircases and little passageways and landings have a curious charm, and are certainly better than corporate blandness.

Service & Facilities

It may be a small bar but it turns out some mean cocktails, and if you get a window seat it's a cracking way to start the evening.

Rooms

Any room with a Minster view we like; even one of the Cosy Doubles on the top floor has a rooftop view. We love the attention to detail, such as good bedside reading lights and bathrobes plus, in the top-tier rooms, a local gift, such as a tin of toffee, as well as fruit.
