Founded under the Byzantine emperors, by the 13th Century it was under Venetian control before becoming an independent city state with links to the Ottoman Empire.
Cable cars climb grizzly Mount Srđ, with a glorious panorama offered at the top; the forested islet of Lokrum, a short taxi-boat ride away, has rocky beaches and a botanical garden. A circuit of the original city walls, as well preserved as any in Europe, is a must-do.
Optional Excursions: Get a bird's eye view from the top of Mount Srđ before enjoying a walking tour with a local guide through the old city or take in the city's ancient streets in a vintage electric car. Alternatively enjoy a leisurely cruise to the Elaphite Islands, stopping at Tolocep and Lopud on Dubrovnik's archipelago.
Today you'll visit the glorious Croatian island Vis, famous for its beautiful bays, intriguing history and excellent wine-making. You might recognise Vis from hit film Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.
Known as Croatia's cultural centre due to its numerous museums, churches and archaeological sites, Split is the country's second biggest city, with the ancient part of town classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site. You'll disembark the Golden Horizon this morning and have plenty of time to explore or join a post-cruise excursion.
