We are thrilled to announce our very first Literary Festival on Water. Departing in October 2021, this unique eight-day river cruise on the Danube will lead you on an unforgettable voyage along one of Europe's great rivers. Sailing in style on an Emerald Waterways Star-Ship, you will enjoy an exciting range of talks, interviews, book signings and Q&As on board with famous and inspiring writers.

Created in partnership with the popular Henley Literary Festival, this unique holiday promises the chance to enjoy fantastic food, wine and beautiful views as you explore some of central Europe's greatest cities, including Vienna and Budapest, while rubbing shoulders with some of our favourite personalities from the world of books.

During this wonderful voyage along the Danube you'll have plenty of time to discover two of Europe's great capitals: Vienna, famous for its art, culture and local culinary specialties (including its delicious patisseries) and the historic city of Budapest, known for its magnificent buildings such as the Hungarian Parliament Building and Buda Castle. Along the way, there will be so much more to enjoy, including guided walks, gourmet tastings and other on-shore excursions, plus the chance to discover the atmospheric old towns of Passau and Linz, the breathtaking 900-year-old abbey at Melk, and the stunning natural beauty of the UNESCO-listed Wachau Valley.

Joanna Trollope OBE is the author of seventeen highly acclaimed bestselling novels such as A Village Affair, The Choir and The Rector's Wife. Trollope has written a number of historical novels, many under the pseudonym Caroline Harvey.

    Passau, Germany

    Passau is a pretty sight, with its museums and monasteries, cobblestone streets and graceful arcades. Here you could stroll through the old town's narrow alleys and see the hilltop Oberhaus Fortress from the town below. You can also view the town from above from the fantastic Oberhausmuseum. St. Stephen's Cathedral is a wonderful example of Baroque architecture and home to Europe's largest church organ with more than 17,000 pipes.

    Straddling the Danube River midway between Salzburg and Vienna, Linz is a beautiful historic city full of Baroque architecture including its Old Town Hall and the Alter Dom cathedral. The main square is a major attraction and this creative UNESCO boasts a couple of great art museums.

    Bratislava, Slovakia

    Cobbled streets pave the course for daily life in Bratislava, where winding alleys and a truly rural atmosphere blend together to create a truly distinctive Slovakian capital. Enjoy a guided hike to Bratislava Castle, with a silhouette that looks as though it was pulled from the pages of a fairytale. This striking landmark was most recently rebuilt in a Renaissance style, but it still retains some of its original features. Alternatively, explore the historic architecture in the compact town centre during an included guided tour, where everything is in walking distance, including the ornate exterior of the Slovak National Theatre.
