With rolling country meadows alongside glistening blue sea, the beautiful Somerset and Devon coasts are everything you'd hope for in a UK getaway. And for train buffs, this five-day break also has no fewer than five different railways on which you'll travel.
Staying in the pretty market town of Tiverton in Devon, you will ride both the Dartmouth Steam Railway and river boat at the beautiful fishing port, with its narrow streets and medieval buildings. Also in Devon, you'll board the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway for a two-mile round trip with a stop off to ride the Victorian funicular cliff railway up to Lynmouth.
Your stay begins, however, with a picturesque 20-mile journey across the glorious Somerset countryside, including the Quantock Hills and spectacular views along the coastline.
Make your own way to the hotel, the Best Western Tiverton, where you'll meet the Tour Manager and enjoy a relaxing evening.
This morning you'll board the coach and travel to the picturesque village of Bishops Lydeard to join the West Somerset Railway to Minehead. The route follows over 20 miles of glorious Somerset countryside with highlights including the Quantock Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the distant hills of Exmoor, and spectacular views along the Devon coastline. From here you'll travel to the pretty historic village of Dunster. Set on the hills is Dunster Castle which offers dramatic views over the village, which is filled with many listed buildings.
Today you'll travel by coach to Woody Bay Station, where you'll board the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway, for a two-mile round trip through stunning north Devon countryside before the coach takes you to the nearby town of Lynton. From here, take the Victorian Funicular Cliff Railway, a unique water powered lift which offers spectacular views of the north Devon coastline as you glide the 862 foot track to the town of Lynmouth. Explore each town with wealth of quaint curio, pottery and souvenir shops, as well as the local history museum.
Join the South Devon Railway this morning at Buckfastleigh and embark on the seven-mile journey which follows a picturesque route alongside the River Dart to Totnes. On arrival, you'll board the boat cruise service and follow the valley full of natural beauty to Dartmouth. This beautiful fishing port is filled with narrow streets, sweeping steps and medieval buildings. After free time you'll join the foot ferry to Kingswear then board the Dartmouth Steam railway to Paignton, which runs seven miles along the spectacular Torbay coast and through the wooded slopes.
After breakfast you are free to check out of the hotel and depart at leisure; you could even take the opportunity to explore Tiverton.
